The 3-kilometre boardwalk that runs along Lake Ontario from Ashbridges Bay to Balmy Beach is, for many residents, the whole reason they moved to the Beaches. On a clear day, with the lake stretching south and the skyline glittering in the distance, it's hard to argue with them.
The boardwalk is packed in summer — beach volleyball, cyclists, roller bladers, dogs, kids, seniors — and almost solemnly beautiful in winter, when the ice fishers set up and the lake does what it does. Come at sunrise for the full effect.
Ashbridges Bay at the western end is the hub: boat launches, the yacht club, the volleyball courts, and access to the beach. The eastern end at Balmy Beach is quieter, the sand narrower, the atmosphere more local.
